Head Gasket

The head gaskets included in this kit are specifically engineered for use in the B58 Gen 1 turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engines found in various BMW chassis.

Gen 1 replaces BMW part # 11128654268 and #11128654269.

MLX Head Gasket

C14144-036

Composed of multiple layers of embossed coated and uncoated stainless steel, Cometic MLX gaskets are specially designed to conform to the surfaces of the cylinder head and engine block on the first heat cycle, creating a chemical bond via Cometic's proprietary coatings. These coatings provide a micro-seal for fluids against the head and block surface.

The layers of the MLX gasket act as a spring, protecting against blowout and increasing active seal height by compensating for increased head lift.

MLX Head Gaskets are different from MLS because they feature an extra, specialized 'stopper' fold-over layer. This layer provides a torque limiting surface that prevents yielding of the combustion seal.

Cut-Ring Head Gasket

Factory OEM & MLS head gaskets are only engineered to handle a limited amount of cylinder pressures before they start to leak, causing a range of issues, including engine overheating, loss of power, misfires, and in severe cases, catastrophic engine failure.

Athena-SCE Cut Ring Head Gaskets are uniquely designed to handle increased cylinder pressure caused by power modifications, making them the recommended choice for applications making 16+ psi.

Athena-SCE's gasket body is composed of Motorgasket, a reinforced material developed by Athena's R&D department. This consists of a steel core covered with two layers of asbestos-free aramid fibre and offers excellent thermal and mechanical resistance without compromising its ability to adapt to mating surfaces.

To ensure maximum sealing under all conditions, a silicone bead is also applied to critical sealing areas, such as oil and coolant passages.

The AISI 304 stainless steel cooper rings bite into the aluminum head, providing maximum sealing around the cylinder bore and optimizing engine performance, even on engines with nitrous and/or turbo applications that exceed 2 bar boost.

Please be aware that the gasket should be 0.5mm to 1mm larger than the piston. For example, if the piston measures 84mm, then the gasket should be the next size up, either 84.5mm or 85mm.

Before installation, it is crucial to have the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block professionally cleaned and resurfaced to ensure they are completely flat.

Head Gasket Installation instructions:

  1. Make sure that the engine block and cylinder head surfaces are clean, flat, and free from any debris, oil, or coolant.

  2. Install the head gasket on the engine block and ensure that it is properly aligned. Avoid twisting or bending the gasket during installation.

  3. Place the cylinder head on top of the gasket and install the head bolts or studs in their correct positions.

  4. Follow the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications and tighten the bolts or studs in the proper sequence to ensure even clamping force across the gasket.

  5. After the initial tightening, re-torque the head bolts or studs after the engine has been started and then allowed to cool to room temperature. This will ensure that the gasket is properly seated and compressed.

  6. It is recommended to not use any additional sealant on the gasket, as it is already coated with a Viton rubber sealant. Using additional sealant can hinder the performance of the gasket.

Head Stud Kit:

The ARP2000 Head Stud Kit, 203-4705, is designed for the turbocharged inline 6-cylinder B58 engines found in various BMW chassis and the Toyota GR Supra A90/A91.  As you increase the power output of your engine beyond its factory specifications, the head and block may start to separate, causing factory bolts to stretch and fail. ARP Head Studs are stronger than factory bolts, ensuring your race engine stays together even under extreme conditions.

The Custom Age 625+ option, 203-4706, is made from a material that has a tensile strength of 260 ksi, which is substantially higher than the 190 ksi of the ARP 2000 head stud. It's an ideal choice for individuals who want to push the limits of their B58 builds and require a stronger head stud.

Head Stud Kit Installation Instructions:

1. To ensure proper thread engagement and accurate torque readings, clean ALL threads in the block. Chase if necessary with ARP Thread Chaser.
2. Clean and inspect all hardware prior to installation. Look for obvious defects or shipping damages, plus proper fit, length and dimension.
3. If the cylinder head studs protrude into a water jacket, lubricate the block threads of the studs with ARP THREAD SEALER.
4. Screw studs into the block “HAND TIGHT ONLY”.
5. Install the cylinder head(s) and check for binding or misalignment.
6. Lubricate the stud threads, nuts and washers with ARP ULTRA-TORQUE FASTENER ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT.
Then install the washers and the nuts onto the studs and tighten them hand tight.
ARP recommends using the ARP ULTRA-TORQUE FASTENER ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT that is provided with each kit as opposed to motor oil. This is due to higher friction on the studs as well as inconsistencies in the clamping force of the fasteners when motor oil or other low quality lubricants are used.
